| On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals by Turid Rugaas A MUST - this book illustrates a lot of the communication that your dog displays - behaviors that even 'experienced" trainers mis-diagnose or miss altogether! Should be required reading for dog owners |
Canine Body Language by Brenda Aloff Also a must - lots of pictures to show different body language, so that you understand exactly what your dog is telling you |
Dog Training by Dummies by Jack & Wendy Volhard Stupid name - GREAT book - not too "basic" or too advanced - perfect for those of us intermediates heading towards advanced… and with lots of asides - nutrition, management, etc. |
Don't Shoot the Dog! By Karen Pryor Great intro to Operant Conditioning and Clicker training. Super to understand positive motivation training |
| How To Raise a Dog When Nobody's Home by Jerry Climer One of the best - if not the best - book on raising a puppy successfully in today's fulltime job world |
Tricks of the Trade by Pat Hastings This is a GREAT book for anyone getting in to the conformation world. Not specifically oriented toward the conformation ring, but everything around it from general husbandry/care to conditioning, etc. Really applicable to anyone who has more than just a "pet". |
Schutzhund Obedience: Training in Drive by Sheila Booth & Gottfried Dildei A fantastic intro in to using the motivational techniques (training in drive) that started in the SchH community and now is popular in AKC Obedience, Flyball, Agility, etc. |
Tracking: from the Beginning by Gary Patterson The ABSOLUTE BEST book on Tracking. EVER. Applicable to all Tracking as it really discusses good Tracklaying and teaching a solid foundation - whether you stick with ground-scent tracking (SchH) or air-scenting (AKC/SAR). |
